The USA is full of fantastic off-roading destinations for those who love to get behind the wheel of a 4×4. There are all sorts of different terrains and weathers that you’ll have to deal with in the process, but you’ll have a lot of fun, too!
Keep in mind that before we take a look at the list, you need to be careful before you head out there. Some of these destinations aren’t for the faint of heart. No matter what your skill level, you should always carry emergency supplies. This includes first aid kits, a phone, and as documented by Trek Southwest, a survival kit. This will ensure that if anything does go wrong, you won’t be in dire straits.
Now we’ve got that part out of the way, let’s move on to the list!
Mendocino National Forest
If you’re looking for a scenic trip that will offer all sorts of experiences, Mendocino National Forest might be the answer. It’s actually the only National Forest in California that isn’t crossed by a road. This means it’s easy to feel totally shut off from the rest of the world. You can camp there if necessary and there plenty of fire rings and picnic tables, too.
Engineer Pass is another trek that is filled with beautiful and scenic spots. Keep in mind that if you’re going to head over to Colorado for this one, you’re going to need to know what you’re doing. Engineer Pass isn’t the hardest place to go off-roading, but you still need to have a certain amount of technical expertise. This is a breathtaking place to visit, literally! You’ll be at around 13,000ft when you’re up there.
Moab is one of the most popular places to go off-roading, so get there early, or you might run into problems. It’s never a good idea to go it alone if you’re going to Moab, due to some of the very tight sections you’ll run into. Bring a bunch of friends along and get prepared to be driving real slow in some sections.
The Rubicon Trail is another destination in California that is a must-visit if you know what you’re doing. There are some incredible views, and the trail is one of the most popular of its kind in the world. However, the Rubicon Trail is very difficult to drive. There are some sections that you can bypass, but others that you’ll be forced to navigate. Average drivers should not attempt this under any circumstances.
Death Valley National Park
And so, we come to arguably the most famous of them all. Before you even bother venturing out to this scorchingly hot location, make sure you are adequately protected. Use all the information we discussed earlier, as well as doing much more research online. This is remote territory, and if you get stuck or lost, the consequences can be life-ending. Make sure you’re a very competent driver, and you’ve prepared adequately before you even attempt this.
